The Emigration Docs contain images of
original documents pertaining to the 1846 application for
"Permission to Leave" by Anna Margaretha (Hofmann) Zellhoefer of
Brachbach, Mittelfranken, Bavaria, along with several of her children and
friends.
After permission was obtained, that group migrated to Sullivan Township
in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, USA. The youngest son Johann Michael
was denied permission at that time, the board ruling that he must first do
his military stint (6 years!). Documents are included then for his
own departure in 1853, when he was finally allowed to join his family in
Wisconsin.
The copies of the original documents were impossible for me, being
handwritten in old German, which is so difficult for anyone who knows
little of either the German language or of the old script.
So you will see here the original images, along with with their
transcriptions into German and then further translated into English.
A bit slow but I think quite interesting, even for persons not related!
I again leave my eternal thanks to the several people of both Germany
and of Austria who worked so hard and so well to help with all the
translation work. Their names will appear along with the results of
their efforts. |
